Renting a car after landing at KLIA gives you the freedom to start your journey immediately — without waiting for public transport, arranging multiple transfers or adjusting your travel plans around somebody else's schedule.

But airport car rental is much smoother when you know what to prepare before you arrive. From your driving licence and pickup arrangement to vehicle inspection and return, this guide explains the important things to know before collecting your rental car at KLIA or KLIA2.

Quick Answer

Can you pick up a rental car directly at KLIA?

Yes. With MKAZ, airport handover is arranged directly with the operations team so you can collect your vehicle at the agreed terminal pickup point. Your exact meeting instructions are shared before collection.

1. Prepare Before You Arrive at KLIA

The easiest airport pickup starts before your flight lands. Make sure your booking details are correct, your phone is reachable on arrival and all required driving documents are ready for verification.

Confirm your pickup date, time and terminal.
Make sure your contact number is reachable in Malaysia.
Keep your driving licence and required documents ready.
Inform the rental team if your flight schedule changes.

2. Bring the Correct Driving Documents

Your driving documents must be valid and suitable for driving in Malaysia. The requirements may differ depending on whether you hold a Malaysian or foreign driving licence.

A

Malaysian Drivers

Prepare your valid physical Malaysian driving licence or the live Digital Driving Licence displayed through the MyJPJ application. Screenshots should not be relied on for licence verification.

B

International Drivers

Foreign renters should prepare their valid physical domestic driving licence together with an International Driving Permit where required. The permit should be issued by the relevant authority in your home country.

Important for International Travellers

Do not wait until you arrive in Malaysia to sort out driving-document requirements. Confirm what you need before travelling so your vehicle handover is not delayed.

3. Complete Your Online Check-In Before Pickup

If you receive an MKAZ QuickPass check-in request before your rental begins, complete it before arriving at the airport. This allows the team to prepare your reservation details earlier and can help reduce the time needed during vehicle handover.

Airport travellers are often carrying luggage, travelling with children or arriving after a long flight. Completing verification before pickup means less paperwork when you are ready to leave the terminal.

4. Know Where Your Airport Handover Will Take Place

KLIA is a large airport and KLIA Terminal 1 and KLIA Terminal 2 have different arrival areas. Always follow the meeting instructions sent by the MKAZ team rather than assuming the same pickup point applies to every terminal.

KLIA TERMINAL 1

KLIA Terminal 1

Airport handover is arranged around the terminal arrival area based on your confirmed reservation and collection instructions.

KLIA TERMINAL 2

KLIA Terminal 2

MKAZ pickup arrangements may use the Arrival Lane at Level 2 around Gates 5, 6 or 7. Follow the latest instructions sent for your booking.

Don't rush outside immediately

Once you have collected your luggage, check your latest WhatsApp or booking communication and confirm the exact handover point before leaving the terminal building.

5. Check the Vehicle Before Driving Off

Before leaving KLIA, take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the rental vehicle and make sure you understand its current condition.

Walk around the exterior and check existing marks.
Check the interior and confirm your belongings fit comfortably.
Familiarise yourself with lights, wipers and basic controls.
Confirm the fuel level and return requirement.
Ask questions before leaving if anything is unclear.
Keep your rental contact details accessible during the trip.

6. Understand Your Payment and Rental Terms

Review your booking confirmation before collection so you know what has already been paid, what remains payable and what conditions apply to your reservation.

MKAZ operates on a cashless basis for rental payments, with supported Visa or Mastercard debit and credit cards. Where card verification or pre-authorisation applies, make sure the cardholder and payment details meet the requirements stated for the booking.

7. Be Ready for the Drive Out of KLIA

Once you leave the airport, you will quickly join Malaysia's expressway network. Set your navigation before moving off and avoid trying to configure your phone while driving.

1

Set your destination first

Enter your hotel, home or first destination into Google Maps, Waze or your preferred navigation app while the vehicle is still parked.

2

Be prepared for toll roads

Many routes from KLIA towards Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and surrounding areas use toll roads. Make sure you understand the payment method available in the vehicle before beginning your journey.

3

Drive according to local road rules

Malaysia drives on the left side of the road. International travellers should take a moment to familiarise themselves with local traffic signs and road conditions before leaving the airport.

8. What If Your Flight Arrives Late at Night?

Late-night arrivals are common at KLIA, so your airport rental should be planned around your actual flight schedule. MKAZ provides midnight pickup and return support at KLIA and KLIA2, with airport operations currently standing by daily until around 2:00 a.m.

Flight delayed?

Inform the MKAZ team as soon as your arrival time changes. Do not assume the original handover time can remain unchanged if the flight is significantly delayed.

9. Returning Your Rental Car to KLIA

Airport return should be planned just like airport pickup. Allow enough time for traffic, vehicle return arrangements, luggage unloading and your airline check-in.

Confirm whether you are flying from Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.
Check your agreed rental return time.
Follow the return instructions provided by the team.
Remove all personal belongings before handing over the vehicle.
Check the required fuel level before reaching the airport.
Leave extra time during peak traffic periods.
