How MKAZ Charges: Understanding Your Rental Charges & Rental Agreement
What exactly are you paying for when you rent a car? From your booking amount to fuel, late returns, damage, summons and post-rental charges, here is how the MKAZ charging process works.
When you rent a car, the amount shown during booking is the starting point — but the final cost of a rental can also depend on how the vehicle is used, when it is returned and whether anything happens during the rental period.
That does not mean every rental comes with additional charges. For most customers, the rental is straightforward: book, collect the vehicle, use it responsibly and return it according to the agreed conditions.
Additional charges only become relevant when a particular service, event or responsibility under the Rental Agreement applies.
How does MKAZ charge a rental?
Your confirmed rental price covers the vehicle and services included in your reservation. Additional amounts may apply when you request another service, extend the rental, return the vehicle late, return it with insufficient fuel, incur a traffic summons, cause damage, lose supplied equipment or otherwise become responsible for a cost under the Rental Agreement.
A Rental Has More Than One Charging Stage
It helps to think about rental charges in four different stages.
The important distinction is that some amounts are known before the rental begins, while others can only be determined if something happens during or after the rental.
What Are You Paying When You Book?
Your reservation price is based on the vehicle, rental duration, location and services selected during booking.
Depending on the reservation, the booking amount may include:
- Vehicle rental charges
- Selected protection products
- Optional equipment or add-ons
- Delivery or collection charges
- Out-of-hours service fees
- Applicable location or operational charges
MKAZ currently allows customers to either pay the full reservation amount or, for eligible bookings, pay 25% upfront to confirm the reservation.
Where the 25% option is selected, the remaining balance must be successfully paid before the vehicle can be released.
Your booking confirmation matters.
Always check the vehicle, rental dates, pickup location, return location, selected extras and amount shown in your confirmation. These form the starting point of the rental.
What Types of Additional Charges Can Apply?
Not every customer will incur the charges below. They only apply when the relevant situation occurs.
| Type of Charge | Why It May Apply | When Identified |
|---|---|---|
| Rental Extension | When you request and receive approval to keep the vehicle beyond the original rental period. | During rental |
| Late Return | When the vehicle is returned after the agreed return date or time without an approved extension. | At return |
| Fuel | When the vehicle is returned below the fuel level recorded during handover. | At return |
| Damage | When new vehicle damage is identified and liability applies under the Rental Agreement. | Return / post-rental |
| Traffic Summons | Where a traffic offence is linked to the vehicle during your rental period. | During or after rental |
| Tolls & Parking | Outstanding toll, parking or other road-related charges incurred while the vehicle was rented. | During or after rental |
| Cleaning | Where the vehicle requires cleaning, deodorisation or restoration beyond normal turnaround cleaning. | At return |
| Missing Equipment | Where an accessory or item provided with the vehicle is missing, lost or damaged. | At return |
| Excess Mileage | Only where the applicable rental carries a limited mileage allowance. | At return |
| Zone / Location | Where travel, delivery or collection involves an approved chargeable area or location. | Booking / during rental |
| Out-of-Hours | Where an approved pickup or return takes place outside standard operating hours. | Booking / service |
What Are You Signing During Pickup?
One of the most important parts of vehicle collection is the Rental Agreement.
This is not simply a document confirming that you received the car. It records the rental arrangement between MKAZ and the hirer and sets out the conditions attached to the use of the vehicle.
Read this before you sign.
Depending on your reservation, the Rental Agreement may record or refer to:
- Your name and authorised driver information
- Vehicle registration and vehicle details
- Pickup date and time
- Agreed return date and time
- Rental amount and applicable charges
- Fuel level at handover
- Mileage conditions, where applicable
- Protection and damage liability conditions
- Security deposit or pre-authorisation, where applicable
- Permitted use of the vehicle
- Restricted or prohibited use
- Responsibilities relating to damage, traffic offences, tolls and outstanding charges
- Payment authorisation for legitimate outstanding rental-related amounts
By signing or accepting the Rental Agreement, the hirer is agreeing to those conditions for that rental.
That is why customers should not treat the pickup signature as merely a formality.
Before signing: If the return time, vehicle condition, fuel level, driver details, protection package or another important detail does not look correct, raise it with the MKAZ team during handover.
Does Signing Allow MKAZ to Charge Your Card Later?
The Rental Agreement may include authorisation for MKAZ to recover legitimate outstanding amounts arising from the rental using the registered payment method.
This becomes important because some liabilities may only be known after the vehicle has been returned.
Examples can include:
- Traffic summons received later by MKAZ
- Parking fines
- Toll charges
- Fuel shortages
- Late-return charges
- Vehicle damage
- Cleaning or restoration costs
- Missing equipment
- Applicable administrative charges
Where reasonably practicable, MKAZ may notify the hirer before an additional amount is processed. However, certain liabilities may need to be processed based on the authorisation already provided under the Rental Agreement.
A Security Pre-Authorisation Is Not Automatically a Charge
This is one of the most common areas of confusion.
Pre-Authorisation
An amount is temporarily reserved against your available card balance. It is held by the card issuer and is not automatically an actual payment to MKAZ.
Actual Charge
A transaction used to settle an amount that is actually payable, such as rental charges or an outstanding rental-related liability.
MKAZ currently requires a security deposit or pre-authorisation for selected partner-platform reservations and may also request one for certain higher-risk, premium or long-term bookings.
Where no outstanding amount is identified, the standard pre-authorisation is generally released by the card issuer within 7 to 21 working days.
Where further assessment is required because of damage, outstanding charges or another unresolved rental matter, the hold may remain pending for a longer period in accordance with the applicable rental conditions.
Late Return vs Rental Extension
These are not the same thing.
Rental Extension
You contact MKAZ before the agreed return time and request additional rental time. The request is subject to vehicle availability and MKAZ approval.
Late Return
The vehicle is kept beyond the agreed return time without an approved extension or is returned later than scheduled.
Approved rental extensions are charged using the prevailing rental rate at the time the extension is requested and approved. The original promotional or booking rate does not automatically continue.
For late returns, MKAZ may grant a maximum grace period of up to five hours, subject to the applicable late-return charges.
If the vehicle is returned more than five hours after the scheduled return time, MKAZ may charge one additional rental day at the prevailing rental rate.
How Are Fuel Charges Handled?
MKAZ currently operates a Same-to-Same Fuel Policy.
The fuel level is recorded during vehicle handover. The customer should return the vehicle at approximately the same fuel level.
If the vehicle is returned with less fuel, an applicable refuelling or fuel-shortage charge may be imposed.
Petrol Vehicles
The applicable fuel amount or penalty required to restore the recorded fuel level may be charged.
Diesel Vehicles
Diesel is charged based on the prevailing non-subsidised market price together with a RM20 refuelling service charge per refuelling transaction.
Returning extra fuel?
Under the Same-to-Same Fuel Policy, fuel remaining above the original handover level is not refundable or transferable.
What Happens When Damage Is Identified?
Vehicle condition is documented as part of the handover and return process.
If new damage is identified, the amount payable depends on the circumstances, applicable protection coverage and the terms of the Rental Agreement.
A damage assessment may involve information such as:
- Pickup photographs
- Return photographs
- Timestamped vehicle videos
- Vehicle inspection findings
- Workshop quotations
- Repair invoices
- Police or accident reports
- Insurance-related documents
Purchasing an optional protection product does not necessarily mean every form of damage or liability is fully covered. Customers should understand the conditions and exclusions applying to the protection selected for their rental.
Traffic Summons, Parking & Road-Related Charges
The hirer is responsible for traffic summons, parking charges, tolls and other road-related liabilities incurred during the rental period.
The important point is that MKAZ may not receive the notice while the car is still with the customer.
A summons can arrive after the vehicle has already been returned.
| Type | Current Administrative Handling Fee |
|---|---|
| Standard Traffic Summons | RM50 per summons, separate from the original fine imposed by the authority. |
| Local Council / PBT Parking Summons | RM30 per summons, separate from the original fine. |
| Serious / Enforcement Cases | RM500 per offence where blacklisting, court action, vehicle impoundment, enforcement restrictions or additional administrative handling is involved. |
These administrative charges are separate from the actual fine, summons, toll or other amount imposed by the relevant authority.
Why Can a Charge Appear After You Return the Car?
Handing back the keys closes the physical use of the vehicle, but it does not necessarily mean every rental-period liability has already been identified.
Vehicle Returned
MKAZ records the vehicle condition, fuel level, mileage and returned equipment.
Rental Is Reviewed
Outstanding items identified during inspection or reconciliation are reviewed.
Later Information May Arrive
Summons, parking notices, toll transactions or third-party information may only reach MKAZ afterwards.
Applicable Amount Is Recovered
Where the hirer is responsible under the Rental Agreement, MKAZ may recover the relevant amount using the authorised payment method.
How Does MKAZ Support a Charge?
MKAZ's approach is to make rental-related charges easier to understand.
Where applicable, an amount may be supported by relevant information available to us, such as:
- Rental records
- Vehicle photographs or videos
- Handover and return records
- Vehicle inspection findings
- Workshop quotations
- Invoices
- Authority notices
- Other documentation relevant to the rental

Clarity Behind Every ChargeBefore Driving Away: 8 Things Worth Checking
A few minutes at handover can prevent confusion later.
A Simple Example
Imagine you book a vehicle for three days.
You pay the confirmed rental amount, collect the car and sign the Rental Agreement.
You then return the car on time, with the same fuel level, no new damage, no missing equipment and no outstanding road-related liabilities.
In that situation, there may be nothing additional to charge.
Now imagine the same rental, but the car is returned several hours late and with less fuel than recorded at pickup.
The original rental price has not changed. However, the rental has now created two separate issues — late return and missing fuel — which may result in additional amounts under the agreed rental conditions.
That is the basic principle behind rental-related charges.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every MKAZ customer pay additional charges?
No. Additional charges only arise when a particular service, event or rental responsibility applies. Customers who return the vehicle according to their agreed rental conditions may have no additional amount to pay.
Why do I need to sign a Rental Agreement during pickup?
The Rental Agreement records the conditions applying to your rental, including the vehicle, rental dates, authorised drivers, return conditions and rental responsibilities. You should review it before accepting the vehicle.
Is a security pre-authorisation already a charge?
Generally, no. A pre-authorisation temporarily reserves an amount against the available balance of your card. It is different from an actual payment transaction.
Why can MKAZ charge me after the vehicle has been returned?
Certain liabilities may only become known after return. Examples include traffic summons, parking fines, toll transactions, damage requiring further assessment or other outstanding rental-related amounts.
Can MKAZ automatically charge my registered payment card?
Where authorised under the applicable Rental Agreement, MKAZ may process legitimate outstanding amounts arising from the rental against the registered payment method.
What happens if I want to keep the car longer?
Contact MKAZ before your scheduled return time. Rental extensions are subject to vehicle availability and approval, and the extension is calculated using the prevailing rental rate at the time it is requested and approved.
What happens if I return the vehicle late?
Late-return charges may apply. A maximum grace period of up to five hours may be granted subject to applicable charges. Returns exceeding five hours may be charged one additional rental day at the prevailing rate.
How does MKAZ calculate fuel charges?
MKAZ operates a Same-to-Same Fuel Policy. The vehicle should be returned with approximately the same fuel level recorded during collection. Where fuel is short, the relevant fuel or refuelling amount may apply.
What if I disagree with an additional charge?
Contact MKAZ Customer Support with your reservation or Rental Agreement number. The team can review the relevant rental records and available supporting information relating to the charge.
